This resource guide provides information about the wildfires on Maui, including links to provide historical and cultural context, news sources, and perspectives on relief and recovery.
Students and educators should utilize information and media literacy skills when consuming information on social media and in the news. Remember to ask:
We’re keeping Maui in our hearts. The journey of recovery will be a long one, and we can activate our care by staying connected to our Maui community and readying ourselves to be of support in the coming months and years. We can start by diving into the history of Lahaina, by listening deeply, by lifting up the gifts and wisdom of that community, and by leaning into our relationships. With the insight from this pilina (connection, relationship), we respect when there is simply a need for space, and when there is a need for action, and we reflect on our own gifts and resources that we might offer, if asked.
We invite our school community to consider the ways we can take action across the long journey. Perhaps it is by contributing to resilience, close to home. Or perhaps it’s talking story with our Maui friends,‘ohana, and partners, and brainstorming with colleagues or peers about how our school might kākoʻo through classes and clubs. The Community & Civic Engagement (C+CE) Office can be a thought partner, a connector, and an organizer. Please visit us in SCIL405 or email cce@iolani.org.
