Tips for Evaluating Websites

Who's behind the information?

  1. Spend a minute identifying the author or organization responsible for the webpage or website.
  2. Open a NEW TAB in your browser and search for information about the website, author, and/or organization.
  3. See what OTHER sources are saying, not just the website itself.

What's the evidence?

  1. What sources are the webpage or website using? Trace claims and quotes back to their original context.
  2. If there are sources linked in the text, open those links in NEW TABS in your browser.
  3. If other sources are mentioned but not linked, use a NEW TAB in your browser to search for the original studies or research.
  4. Use CTRL+F or Command+F to find keywords on the page.
  5. See if you can find OTHER sources that corroborate the claims.
  6. If you're unsure of whether the other sources you find are trustworthy, go back to the steps under "Who's behind the information?"
