Rev. Coon joined 'Iolani School in 1957 as a teacher and continued to serve as a basketball coach, Registrar, College Counselor, Director of Admissions, Director of Studies, and Assistant Headmaster. He was appointed Headmaster in 1970 and remained as such until his retirement in 1992. Accomplishments during his tenure include the admission of girls and the addition of facilities such as the Art Building, Castle Building, Father Bray Athletic Center, Nangaku Building, and Ai Building. As 'Iolani School's longest-tenured Headmaster, he saw through the improvement and expansion of the buildings and grounds; strove to maintain high academic standards; and led the movement to coeducation in 1979.
